WORKSHOPS

TOOLS TO KU'I

We currently offer consecutive workshops to teach participants about the
Papa Ku'i 'Ai and Pōhaku Ku'i 'Ai, two Hawaiian items used to make pa'i 'ai and poi.

These tools carry generational value in Hawaiian 'ohana and allow you to carry on the practice of preparing food through ku'i at home.

We encourage participants to come with 1-2+ family members.

PAPA KU'I 'AI

Part 1

Using roughed out blanks, create a fully sanded and oiled board.

PŌHAKU KU'I 'AI

Part 2

Shape a smooth pōhaku from provided blanks.

When you leave this workshop, you will be set to ku'i food with your new implements.

What to be Prepared for:

1. Each workshop typically lasts a full 8 hour day.
2. Attendees will be expected to be hands-on throughout.
3. You will (learn to) use hand held power tools. LOILOA staff will help to guide all use.
4. Crafting your work will be tiring. It is ideal for 2-3+ members of your 'ohana to attend. We encourage this not only so you can take physical breaks, but also because these items carry generational value.
